Southern yellow-billed hornbill (Tockus leucomelas) ...
Yellow-billed hornbills feed mainly on the ground, where they forage for seeds, small insects, spiders and scorpions.
White-backed Vulture. (Gyps africanus).
Burchell's starling (Lamprotornis australis) or Burchell's glossy-starling. Sadly this was taken in the shade so you cannot see the true gloss.
Cape glossy starling (Lamprotornis nitens).
Crested francolin (Dendroperdix sephaena)...
As above.
South African ostrich (Struthio camelus australis) male.
Southern white-crowned shrike (Eurocephalus anguitimens)...
As above.
Saddle-billed stork (Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis)...
As above.
Egyptian geese (Alopochen aegyptiaca) .
I think this is a yellow-billed kite (Milvus aegyptius).

Shrikes are one of my favourite bird families. I think it's because I see them only rarely, hardly ever in the UK and just on holiday. Red-backed used to breed in the UK. May still do, but if so it has to be kept secret because of eggers, toggers and twitchers. The White-crowned is a new one to me but I know I would love to watch them.
ReplyDeleteThanks Phil, that shrike is a particularly pretty bird I think. I am not sure I have ever seen the White-crowned before, the two I know best are the White helmetshrike and the Crimsonbreasted shrike. I hope that all is well with you and that you are not in a flooded area, the weather is foul. Cheers Diane
Delete...Diane, what a fabulous collection of feathered friends, most of which I've never seen before. Thanks for sharing.

DeleteWow those are nice Diane. That shrike is quite the tree-top decoration. Nice flight shot at the end ... and all your portraits are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI struggle with flight shots and although that last one is quite distant I quite liked it. Hope all is well with you, Diane
