My thanks once again to Christelle for these photos. I have so many photos of my own to catch up with, but it is taking so much time trying to find the ID's of many.
This little fellow flew inside the house, when Christelle caught it to take it outside, it was in no hurry to leave her hand.
Southern double-collared sunbird or lesser double-collared sunbird (Cinnyris chalybeus)...

A rare sighting of a European Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus), they breed in the Palaearctic region and winter south to the coasts of Africa. Not just a rare sighting but also this one only has one leg... Seen in the Eastern Cape.

Hi Diane, the Sunbird photo is spectacular. What a special moment to have it sit on Christelle's hand and not be in a hurry to leave. Have a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteI agree the sunbird is stunning and it seemed quite happy to stay with Christelle for a while longer You have a great week as well and take care. Diane
DeleteHi Diane - wonderful shots of the sunbird - amazing sunburst colours ... gorgeous. Nature is extraordinary.
ReplyDeletePoor little Oystercatcher ... but at least he has southern company. Cheers Hilary
Hilary I wonder if that poor little fellow is alone if it will try to winter over in S.A. with the African Oystercatchers. Who knows how it will cope. I agree nature is amazing though so cruel sometimes, this is a stunningly beautiful little bird. Have a great week and keep warm, Diane
DeleteHello,:=) Wow! I think this is the most beautiful bird I have ever seen, and the amazing thing is it seems quite comfortable on Christelle's hand. It's easy to see why it's named the S D.C Sunbird. The vivid an varied colours are spectacular. I feel sorry for the one legged Oyster Catcher, it's also a lovely shore bird.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Portugal.:=)
Hi Sonjia, nice to 'meet' you, Thanks so much for the visit and the kind comment. Have a great week and keep safe Diane
ReplyDeleteHello Diane. It seems that the sunbird was a little stressed after finding itself indoors. But it cam to no harm and instead gave your friend a unique opportunity that she took so well. It is interesting that the Oystercatcher was so far south but found company with the other species, even though the two had probably never seen the other before.
ReplyDeleteI hope you can get up to speed with your own pictures soon. These are very busy and worrying times for us all. Stay safe and well.
such beautiful birds.. i love seeing these different versions of our birds, just further south. It's truly amazing how a bird can cope with one leg, and the oystercatcher somehow found a similar species. nature is awe inspiring!
ReplyDeleteHello Diane. I am returning your best wishes for Christmas and the New Year. I really think that in the last few days there is light at the end of the very dark tunnel into which we were taken. Those of us with an interest in the world of wildlife are more capable than many to appreciate and enjoy 2022. Best wishes to you and yours.
ReplyDeleteHappy 2022 Diane. I hope things get easier for you you to post soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks Phil and belated Happy New Year to you also. Not sure where the days go to but I seem to be forever busy! Cheers Diane
