With thanks to Christelle who took these photos of birds in their garden during the lockdown at the beginning of May.
The Crowned hornbill (Tockus alboterminatus) or sometimes it seems to be called (Lophoceros alboterminatus), A little confusing to say the least of it.

It looks like they are feeding young. The youngsters stay with their parents for about 8 weeks so this would certainly be the end of their Autumn in South Africa...

This bird was taken on the same day, some discussion over ID, but I think it is one of the Weaver family that is either young or maybe some type of Leucism,

That hornbill is a big bird and sure stands out with that red beak and long tail. I’ve never seen a bird with leucism. Thanks for sharing these Diane.
ReplyDeleteAll the hornbill family have huge beaks some more so than others. Keep well Diane
DeleteHi Diane - Christelle's photos are delightful ... wonderful to see the Crested Hornbills in close up ... as too the little weaver. Take care ... I'm not sure where France is at - and I suspect we're still in lockdown for another 3 weeks - may have a little bit of relief, but yours has been pretty stringent. All the beset - Hilary
ReplyDeleteThanks Hilary. On Monday there is some relaxation on our lockdown. We do not have to carry permits all the time except if we are going more than 100 kms from home. I can walk outside the 1 km radius alone. No restaurants open though but a few other shops. We will not make much change here and stay isolated as much as possible until things are very much better. Thankfully we live in a green zone rather than a red or orange. zone. Stay safe Diane
DeleteWow, these are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThanks Natalia, hope all is well Diane
DeleteWhat fabulous birds! Great images of them all.
ReplyDeleteIt's great to see you at 'My Corner of the World' this week!
Thanks Betty, I do miss living in South Africa for many things and the wildlife is one of the biggest reasons. Take care Diane
DeleteWhat gorgeous photos! The hornbill does indeed have a big bill, doesn't it? How amazing to get such good photos. Thanks to Christelle!
ReplyDeleteSure Christelle will appreciate your thanks. Hornbills are extremely interesting birds. Take care Diane.
DeleteSuch beautiful birds. I think you might be right about the ID of the last one but I'm certainly no expert. I just like to enjoy the beautiful little birds. Have a wonderful weekend Diane. I believe we will be getting sunshine again tomorrow and warm temperatures which makes 4-5 days of very good weather.
ReplyDeleteThanks Penny, we have a cold week coming up and I really wanted to do more planting but it will have to wait in case we have a frost!!! Take care Diane
DeleteWow...such an incredible bird! We are not privileged here in the states to have such wonderment! Great photos.

Beautiful, beautiful photos!
ReplyDeleteInterestingly, one of our states, Sarawak is nicknamed "Land of the Hornbills". The hornbill represents the spirit of God to an indigenous tribe in Sarawak.
They are interesting birds and you have even more interesting information. Keep well Diane
DeleteMerci pour ce partage Diane, c'est un bonheur !
