A predator in the garden.......

I opened the shutters the other morning and there it was sitting in our cherry tree watching over the feeders and just waiting.  It was not in the slightest bit disturbed by my presence!

There appears to be a background problem 1/2 way down which I cannot correct - Google having its own way.....

Eurasian sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus)...

As above...

As above.

As above.

European greenfinch (Chloris chloris).
Watch out guys the sparrowhawk is looking for its breakfast.

European goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) and a Eurasian blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus).

Greenfinches and Goldfinches.

As above.

Greenfinch.

With thanks to Richard for ID, these appear to be Emperor Geese (Anser canagicus) in someone's smallholding. They have a few exotic birds there so I see, but I need to try to get better photos with the bigger camera. All I was walking with here was the small Nikon Coolpix.

  1. I rarely see hawks. That one is a beauty and it looks small. The finches are always a treat. The geese are some I’ve never seen. Interesting.

    1. The sparrow hawks are medium size and can easily zap the doves. I have never seen these geese before either. It seems the come from Alaska and sometimes in Canada so keep a watch out!
      Have a good weekend Diane

  2. Hi diane, gorgeous photos. I especially love the first one. I'm not sure about the google blogger glitches. I find a lot of problems with the font these days. Take care and have a wonderful weekend.

    1. Thanks Penny, google has a mind of its own and at times I find it a real pain when it takes over what one is doing!
You have a good week as well and keep warm. Diane

    1. Hi and thanks for the comment. I love the birds of prey, but I would prefer to see them in other places than the garden where I encourage the little birds! Stay safe and have a good week Diane

  4. The hawk was keeping a close eye! And you have some beautiful small birds with lots of color. Love those geese and you got great pics of them with your camera.

    1. Thankfully all the little birds were in hiding and so far as I know it moved on for breakfast elsewhere. Always good to see something a little different though.
Keep well and stay safe, Diane

  5. What a gorgeous hawk. The other birds are pretty too, hopefully, too pretty for the hawk to eat. Hope your weekend is going well!

  8. The geese, finches & tits are awesome sightings Diane, and terrific photos...but the sparrow hawk outside my window would keep me spellbound.
Enjoy your week ahead, and thanks for taking time to link in.

  9. Bonjour Diane,

  11. A great collection of birds. I love the geese. For a while all I ever thought I'd see is Canada Geese, but have also seen some Snow Geese and Cackling Geese lately. I just love all the varieties.

  12. Those are cracking pictures of the Sparrowhawk Diane. Much better than the ones I got this week. I find Sparrowhawks to be always on edge, ready to fly off at the first hint hint of humans. We are just warming up here. With all the other things going on this has been the most awful winter. And now we've lost our May trip to Greece.
