A few of the birds we see during the winter months.

It is ages since I posted on my bird blog, but here are a few recent photos from the garden during December and the start of January.  I still have October and November to go through!!!!

European robin (Erithacus rubecula).

House sparrow (Passer domesticus), female.

Common blackbird (Turdus merula) one of the young birds...

Eurasian blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) on the windowsill.

Great tit (Parus major).

Eurasian sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus).

Eurasian Nuthatch or Wood Nuthatch (Sitta europaea).

Eurasian blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus)...

As above.

Great excitement here yesterday morning, I glanced out of the window and commented that the bird on the step did not look familiar, I grabbed the camera and took 4 quick photos through the window and it was gone. Did a bit of research and came up with Cirl Bunting, a first so far as we know in the garden, and certainly a first for both of us.

I had a fall at the end of November and damaged my Tamron lens. I am still waiting for the spare part (staff shortage so I am told) so all these photos were taken with my old camera the Nikon D3200 with the
55 -300mm telephoto lens. This old lens just will not work on my new D3500 camera!

  1. That Cirl bunting is a beauty. I was taken with the fluffiness of the Great tit too. Great shots, Diane, whatever lens you used! However, I can imagine how it feels not to be able to use your newer camera!

    1. Thanks very much Marie. I find that I am really missing my Tamron, the other lens really does not compare. I love the birds in winter, we see them so much closer, and it is interesting that we have seen new ones as well. It is the first year we have seen the Nuthatch here. Cheers Diane

  2. Hi Diane - they are all stunning photos ... the Sparrowhawk is great to see - but so are the others. The Cirl Bunting is a delight to see - and the cirl bunting is the mascot on the signs for the village of Stokeinteignhead in Devon. So happy you have a new species in the garden ... wonderful to see you with a few photos again. Cheers and Happy New Year - I hope!! Take care - Hilary

    1. Thanks Hilary, interesting that the Cirl Bunting is a mascot as well. I will be happy when I eventually get my Tamron lens back in use so I can also use the newer camera. It is so much simpler to use!
I am hoping that 2022 will be a better year for us all, but I suspect we are going to have to learn to live with COVID. I am extra cautious having had pneumonia 3x. At this stage I am simply looking forward to having a holiday once again!
      Keep safe, Cheers Diane

  4. A Cirl Bunting in the garden is a great find Diane. i have to travel to the south coast to see those and even then they are only in a few regular places, not widespread. Good to see you back with photos.

    1. Thanks Phil, the bunting has certainly cheered up our week here :-) I am still struggling to find time to do all the things I want to - I am sure the time is going quicker than it used to!!! Weekly posts may well become monthly posts!

    1. Thanks for the visit and the comment. The Cirl Bunting was a surprise and I hope it visits again. I am sure I miss a lot of visitors as so often I just glance out of the window and see something new. Now if I had the time to sit there all day...... Cheers Diane

  6. Hello,:=) What an amazing sighting of the little Cirl Bunting, I know how exiting it is to see a new bird in the garden. I once saw a Rock Bunting many years ago, but have never seen it since, but I hope that is not your case. Splendid sharp shots of the Blue tits, the Robin, Sparrow Hawk, and Nuthatch. A delightful variety of birds.

  9. Bonjour mon amie.
