Birds of Europe - All seen in the garden once again.

As always, I hope that my identification is correct, please let me know if there should be any mistakes.
Common blackbird (Turdus merula) male.
French name -  Merle noir

House Sparrow (Passer domesticus), females.
French name - Moineau domestique.

European Greenfinch (Chloris chloris), male.
French name - Verdier d'Europe

Greenfinch and sparrow having an altercation.

European robin (Erithacus rubecula).
French name - Rougegorge familier

Eurasian Collared Dove (Streptopelia decaocto)
French name - Tourterelle turque

House sparrow female taking a look at a daylily...

and in take-off mode sending pollen flying everywhere.

Common blackbird, juvenile.

  1. Hello Diane. Interesting that the Blackbird is very juvenile. Also, could be a male. The young ones sometimes give us discussion over male and female. Even juvenile males have brown primary feathers with often the best way to tell is a look at the tail feathers. If the tail feathers are darker than the brown primaries and erring towards blackish, then it will be a male. Sometimes (in the hand), in summer, we cannot safely say male or female so they go into the database as "juvenile" only. For us it is better to say that we are not sure than incorrectly label the sex.

  7. Wonderful yard birds -- how lucky you are to have them. All wonderful pictures so crisp and clear. The little spat between the greenfinch and sparrow is a fabulous catch -- you and your camera were there at the exact right moment!
