Hello Diane. Interesting that the Blackbird is very juvenile. Also, could be a male. The young ones sometimes give us discussion over male and female. Even juvenile males have brown primary feathers with often the best way to tell is a look at the tail feathers. If the tail feathers are darker than the brown primaries and erring towards blackish, then it will be a male. Sometimes (in the hand), in summer, we cannot safely say male or female so they go into the database as "juvenile" only. For us it is better to say that we are not sure than incorrectly label the sex.
ReplyDeleteThanks Phil for all this info and I have changed it on the blog. My little brain would not have taken that in at all without your explanation so I am more than happy that you have enlightened me. Always happy to learn. Many thanks and have a fab week, hope the weather improves. Diane
