We went out to lunch on Wednesday and luckily for me, we were right next to the Charente River. Although nothing exciting in the way of feathered friends, I do not often see ducks, so that is all I have for this week!
Mallard male (Anas platyrhynchos)... I see they all have rings...
Female...
as above.
Male ready to shoot the rapids, I was not quick enough to catch them in the foam...
Presumably, it was lots of fun though as they flew back for another try. Sadly I did not have the time to wait around and see what else might have happened.
Male, he was swimming against the current and not going very far!!...
a pair.
and a final male...
and female.

Love mallards. There is a pair in the local stream who come back year after year. They are great to watch.
ReplyDeletePretty common, but as I seldom see water birds this was a bit different for me!! Keep well Marie, Diane
DeleteHow amazing that they liked to go into the churning water! I would have never imagined that! Love your beautiful photos...so much detail! Enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteI am guessing the they were born here and learnt at a young age to shoot the rapids. It seemed like they were having fun. I was sorry that I did not have more time to have a second go at photos, the first two that went over caught me by surprise! Thanks for the comment Diane
DeleteAwwww, that must've been quite entertaining. I would have enjoyed it. Your photos...how I love the sunlight & timing.
ReplyDeleteI thank you for taking time out in your day to link in and share your blog with us birders at I'd Rather B Birdin'
Thanks Anni for the comment, I wish that I had of had more time that I could have watched longer, but it was not to be. It is a pleasure to link up. Have a good week Diane
DeleteGreat shots of the mallards. Enjoyable post!
ReplyDeleteThanks Betty I am finding less and less time to get out and take photos.... This was lucky when out to lunch. Cheers Diane
DeleteI was always very fond of Mallards - they have great colours. Would love to have seen them shooting the rapids!
ReplyDeleteCheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
Hi Stewart, I was sorry that I was not fast enough and I could not wait around as it was time to go home! Probably never get another chance as it is not a restaurant that is top of our list but booked by friends. Cheers Diane
DeleteIt sure seems like they are out there playing in the water and having a grand time doing it!
ReplyDeleteThey appeared to be having fun, something I have never seen before and probably won't again. Keep well Diane
DeleteMarch is one of the quietest times of year for birding for me too. It's when many winter birds leave and before the rush of spring migrants. I'm sure things will be better each day for you Diane.
ReplyDeleteI actually find winter is the best for me as we generally have a good collection coming to the garden for food, in summer they have other things in their minds! We do not have water near us that I can get to easily so the ducks made a change for me. Hope all is well, happy birding Diane
DeleteLooks like a lovely day for a waddle around and a splash in the pond. :-)
ReplyDeleteLOL they seemed to be enjoying it. Cheers Diane
